Tuchfabrik Mehler was founded in 1644 and is now managed by Paulus and Ludwig Mehler in the 11th generation.
This makes Tuchfabrik Mehler the oldest cloth manufacturer in Germany and also the 29th oldest industrial company in Germany.
The company site in Tirschenreuth has a long cloth-making tradition and even Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was impressed during his visit in 1786 and was quoted as saying: “The little cloth-making town is beautifully situated.”
The fact that more than half of the inhabitants of Tirschenreuth earned their living as clothmakers in 1850 shows that the clothmaking trade has a long tradition.
